What to sew first.........?

After a month in a new house and workshop (photos will be coming soon!) and lots of renovation later, my sewing machine finally has a table and I've found my sewing box :)

I have to make curtains for every window in the house, along with cushions, a few quilts, some wall hangings....well the list goes on. So what to start with first?

A peg bag of course!

Made using 2" squares to patchwork the front (fabrics from the Delilah and Ditsy collections which can both be found in our new Top Floral Picks section), Ditsy polka dot for the inside and a green mini gingham for the back from the Hideaway collection.

Complete with some super hand painted polka dot dolly pegs that I bought from Diane on ebay.

After weeks of relying on relatives to do our washing (before noticing my other half had plumbed in the washing machine on the day we moved in - something I've not mentioned to anyone), the first batch of washing in our new home is now drying on the line. The type of washing I actually like to do.....

Street Party Anyone? Free Bunting Template and Offers

We've been busy arranging a Street Party to celebrate the Royal Wedding - how exciting! What's not so exciting is that I can remember the last big Royal Wedding :)

Anyway I'm on bunting (rather predictably!). So whilst making some bunting thought I'd put together a bunting template which shows a useful way of maximising the number of flags you get out of a 1/4meter piece. We all have our own way of making bunting and this is my preferred method. Have also included some LOVE applique letters. Obviously our free bunting template can be used for any bunting and it would also look rather nice in rose prints too.

Each 1/4meter piece of fabric can produce 4 full flags (4 front and 4 back).

Here is how our flags look so far.

If you want to download and print our Free Bunting template please click HERE. Note it should be printed on A4 size (flag size when printed should be 20cm across and 24cm down the longest point).

You can fancy up the front of your flags however you want. We have used ribbons, ric rac and appliqued using fabric offcuts. Our hanging ribbon is 25mm wide grosgrain folded and flags attached using zigzag stitch to add interest.

We have also put together a fabric and ribbon bundle to compliment the pattern.

Red, White & Blue Ribbon Bundle contains 11meters of funky red, white and blue ribbon & ric rac plus a further 6meters for free and costs £5.50. Perfect for appliqueing bunting or other projects.

Our Royal Fabric Bundle contains polka dot fabrics from Tanya Whelan and Bella Solids in White & Red. It costs £12.50 and you can make up to 24 flags from this bundle (or anything else you want to make!).

2.Detail of the prints
We've had this collection for over a week and are still finding things (which is also one of the reasons this collection would make great items for little ones, they'll be picking out details for ages). The Tapestry print has a tiny spider's web which is repeated in the Timepiece print.

Its A Hoot Quilt & Scrappy Cushion

Oooooooo finally finished a quilt! Decided to see what I could make using the Complete Collection (1/8m strips) by Momo.

I kept it simple for a first quilt attempt with 5" squares.

I was really surprised at how quickly and easily the front went together - not only painless but also enjoyable!

I spent a couple of days practising meandering quilting techniques, which I got the hang of. Then I decided not to quilt it that way! I wanted some clean, modern lines and for it not to look too busy so I followed the squares to quilt the layers together.

For the back I just used up left-overs and it happened to make a strip.

I chose to pull out the greys of the print by using Moda Bella Solid in Grey for the back (it will be getting a lot of use and I suspect my 2 year old will try and drag it across the floor so white was out!). I found a useful clip on utube for adding the binding to the quilt. I was surprised at how long it took me to hand sew the binding (I was probably just getting impatient by that stage!).

I used Hobbs Heirloom Premium Batting and Momo Plaid in Sky for the binding.

Things I would do differently on my next quilt:

The strip I put across the back was the same size as the blocks on the front. When I sandwiched the quilt everything matched up perfectly. However, because I chose square quilt lines which I quilted on the front, they didn't correspond exactly on the back which looks a bit odd (I've been told I'm staring at it too much!). Anyway I would either use a meandering quilting technique or if I was using straight line quilting I would make the strip on the back much larger so they do not correspond.

I probably made a novice error here but I machine stitched the binding on to the back so that all my hand stitches were then on the front. Anyway I'd do that the other way around next time.

Other than that I'm so happy with it! Love the colours of this collection!

For the cushion I just used any bits of scraps left over from the quilt (feels a bit like I got the cushion for free!). I also used a cream invisible zip and Moda Bella Solid in Natural. For the Egg cushion I just used a unit of Eggs in Fudge.

It has been great using the quilt at night while watching tv but I can't wait until the Summers' evenings when I can sit underneath my quilt on my handmade bench outside!

Actually I've used only a tiny fraction of the complete collection roll. I didn't use any of the pinks and yellows because of other colours in the room I'm going to use the quilt in. Also I'm thinking the pinks and yellows are going to look lovely as a patchwork play mat for a girl.

Speaking of which, I noticed this great free pattern that popped up on Moda recently;

Lovely New Things at Seamstar

We've been busy adding lots of lovely things to Seamstar.

A collection by Shine Shine. This arrived just before Christmas that we didn't get time to blog (who has time to do anything just before Christmas?!). These bold prints are from South Africa and not for the faint hearted!

They come in a mid weight cotton and also a light upholstery weight which is fantastic for cushions and bags.

A whole load of ribbons from American Crafts. We have been in love with American Crafts ribbons and trimmings for a long time. We received a gorgeous delivery over Christmas! Lots of lovely ribbons/trimmings on cards and reels.

These are our favourites which we think would look great used to label handmade goodies......

This is a really easy bag which would make a simple and quick Christmas gift. We think it would also look great made smaller to accompany a party dress. The example doesn't have any interfacing but you could add light or mid weight interfacing as long as you stop it just short of the pleats so your pleats don't get too bulky.

What is great is there is a You Tube video showing each step plus a Free pdf to download. The tutorial is by The DIY Dish which has a lot of great content.

Season No 1. Free Sewing Pattern - Christmas Stocking

Next in our Gifts, Decorations and Craft Fairs series is this super cute Christmas Stocking.....

We made this lovely stocking from soft flannel with a cotton trim at the top and a grosgrain hanging ribbon. It's a manageable project even for a beginner and will make whoever you give it to smile! We've not been a stickler for seam allowances as you later adjust your lining and you cut your cuff to fit your final size. This makes it an enjoyable, easy-going project.

Our finished stocking is 30cm (toe to heel) by 49cm (top of cuff to bottom of toe) and the amounts in the Shopping List reflect this. You can of course make yours bigger or smaller and you'll need to adjust your amounts. The units are measurements from the Seamstar website.

Shopping List:

Flannel or other outer material - 2 units (50cm x 110cm)
We used My Mind's Eye Flannel Found in our Christmas Section HERE

Cotton lining material - 1 unit (50cm x 110cm)
We used Bella White Cotton Found HERE

Light Iron-On Interfacing - 1 meter
We used Seamstar Interfacing Found HERE

Flannel or cotton for heel and toe embellishment - 1 unit or scraps

1. You need to cut 4 stocking shapes – 2 from your outer material and 2 from your lining material. You can download our template HERE and then scale it up (which you can do on a printer/photocopier or just get a big piece of paper with the template in the middle and keep drawing on outline around it, bigger each time, until you get the size you want).

Remember you need a back and a front of the outer material so make sure your sock is facing the right way on your outer material. We put wrong sides of our flannel together and then cut 2 at once to get a back and front.

2. Next embellish your stocking if you want to. We added some fabric to the toe and heel. You could sew on ribbons or applique initials instead. If sewing fabric to the heel and toe try to make sure they are matched in the same place on both stockings as they will meet up when you sew the stocking pieces together. For heel and toe fabric, iron the edge under and sew across to hold it to the stocking piece.

3. We attached a Light Iron-On Interfacing to the back of both stocking pieces. Although flannel has the thickness of felt, by adding the Light Interfacing, it is a touch thicker and adds a professional finish to the stocking. If you are using cotton for your outer material then you will need at least Medium Interfacing.

4. With right sides together, pin the outer pieces and sew all around leaving the top open.

5. The clip around the heel and toe of both outer stocking pieces and then turn the right way.

6. Place your outer stocking on to a piece of the lining material and draw around (don't worry you wont see this when finished). Pin the lining pieces together and sew along the draw line leaving the top open. Then trim close to your sewn line to get rid of excess seams.

7. Now put your lining into your stocking. Trim the top so the stocking and lining are neat and straight.

8. Next you need to make the cuff for your stocking and decide how deep you want your cuff. Our finished cuff was 7cm deep so we cut ours 18cm deep as we are going to fold it over in step 10 (so double your desired finished measurement and add some seam allowance). Measure the opening at the top of your stocking to determine length. Cut your cuff fabric and sew it into a loop the same size as your opening.

9. Fold your cuff in on itself (wrong sides together) and press.

10. Put your cuff inside your stocking. You need to put it inside so the raw edges of the cuff and stocking match up (see pic) and pin.

11. Add your hanging ribbon and also pin into place (again raw edge of the ribbon should match up with the other raw edges with the loop hanging down inside with your cuff.

12. Sew through all layers (outer, lining, cuff and ribbon) around the opening of your stocking.

13. Turn over your cuff and press. Tack your cuff down at either seam (just a couple of hand stitches will do, its just to stop the cuff folding upwards and showing the sewn edges).

14. Fill with presents and smile!

Season No 1. Free Sewing Tutorial - 3 Scarves

Who doesn't love a new handmade scarf at Christmas?

These scarves are simple to make. What's more they are all made in a similar way but achieve totally different looks by use of fabric. So simple, they don't need step by step photos but we've included sizes and guide for each. Not only do they make great gifts, they look really effective on craft stalls and so quick to make.

Flannel/Voile Scarf

Inspired by the Anna-Maria Horner baby blanket which feels super soft and luxurious. This scarf doubles for everyday or going out. Also if you haven't worked with flannel or voile before it is a perfect introduction due to its ease. You can put both flannel and voile in the wash together to pre wash. You could run up half a dozen of these in an hour!

To make:
You need ½ meter of both Voile and Flannel fabric the full width (so each 50cm x 110cm):

1.In both Voile and Flannel, cut 2 strips across the width 110cm long by 22cm wide. See step 4 about choosing your final scarf size;
2.Attach the 2 long Flannel strips together by sewing the short ends together to create 1 long strip. Then press seam;
3.Repeat step 2 with the Voile;
4.At this point pin your Flannel strip closed in a circle and try it on to get your desired length. We trimmed our pieces so the strip measured 190cm but you can shorten or use the full 220cm if you prefer. For us 190cm allowed the scarf to wrap around 3 times as shown in the photo above. Or you can wear it wrapped twice like in the photo below;
5.Pin right sides together and sew along both of the long sides to create a tube. Press seams;
6.Turn the right way and press;
7.Fold one end of the tube inwards 1cm and press;
8.Put the other end of the tube inside the pressed end and sew your scarf closed;
9.Wear, give, sell!

Jersey/Knit Circle Scarf

The circle scarf is a hot item at the moment. It can be warn in so many ways: draped as a single scarf or doubled up chunky to keep out the cold; a shawl, with or without hood; and even a dress!

This funky scarf is made using the new Michael Miller Knit fabrics. Stretchy, jersey fabric usually used for t-shirts and dresses. Lovely and warm for Winter day walks. We were warned that Knits can shrink up to 15% so pre-washing is essential. Ours shrunk by a couple of inches, nothing major (just in case you were expecting to put a meter piece in the wash and get out enough material to make Barbie a scarf).

There are 2 versions of the Circle scarf. You can make it in exactly the same way we made the Flannel/Voile scarf. If doing it that way you can add a different print to the inside or, as we did, use the same print. If you make it this way you can wear it as a scarf or shawl but not a dress. If you want to make it that way then follow the instructions above for the Flannel/Voile scarf. You will need 1m x 110cm of Knit fabric (or 50cm x 110cm of each of 2 Knit prints if using different prints).

Alternatively you can make this second version. This is a simple tube scarf 1m long. This allows you to wear it as a dress as well. You can still fold it in on itself to wear it as a scarf and shawl like we did.

To make:
You need 1 meter of Knit/Jersey fabric:

1.Pre wash;
2.With WRONG sides together, stitch the fabric together down the selvage;
3.Still with wrong sides together and with the right sides facing outwards, press the seam open;
4.Turn inside out;
5.Create a French Seam by sewing along the seam you have already created. You need to sew your second seam so it encases the first so make it slightly larger;
6.Press your seam to the side;
7.Turn the right way and it's ready!

Crinkle Cotton Scarf

Lovely to wear for a night out or for giving to more glamorous friend! You can really go to town and embellish it with luxurious breads, ribbons and trimmings. The only difference in sewing this scarf is it is left open rather than closing it in a loop. So easy and no ironing!

To make:
You need 2 meters of light weight cotton fabric:

1.If you want to add embellishments like ribbons and beads do so now;
2.With right sides together fold the fabric in half length ways;
3.Sew the 3 open sides shut, leaving a 10cm opening for turning;
4.Turn the right way and sew the opening shut;
5.Tie one end of your scarf to a draw or door and twist the other end. Continue twisting until the fabric twists over itself to create a small twisted ball of fabric. Tie the two ends together to encase the twisted fabric;
6.Wet the fabric and hang to dry;
7.When dry the scarf has a crinkled effect and is ready to go out on the town!

Block 3 - All about Spiderwebs

On opening the envelope sent from Crystal my thoughts this time were that she had sent some lovely fabrics. Bright and bold. I also noticed that some of the precut pieces were minute!

I always say i'm a sewer not a quilter and no joking, in the past i've thrown bigger pieces out (quilters please don't faint – I no longer do that!)!!!

Again I nervously, I mean faithfully, looked through the notes and the finished block was to be:

11 inches;
No wonky strips;
No embellishments;
Iron all seams open; and
¼” seam allowance.

This time we were making a Spiderweb pattern. I had no idea what a Spiderweb pattern was. Thankfully Crystal sent links to tutorials and this was my favourite spiderweb tutorial.

I have to say, even after glancing over the tutorials I had a minor freak out because:
(a) I was running 9 days over the deadline which put me in a tizz!;
(b) I'm not the best at folding fabric on angles and it opening out at the angle I intended; and
(c) It all looked really difficult, mathematical, difficult and difficult.

After calming down and reading everything again this is what I concluded:

- All the maths is really to create the kite template (the bit in the middle), once that is made no maths needed.
- You can make a paper template to make sure that the pieces of fabric you sew are going to cover the right area. Some people sew through the paper template and later rip it off and some people just place the paper template underneath before attaching a strip and remove it without sewing into it.
- Alternatively you can attach your strips to a triangular piece and later cut it down to form the central kite shape.

Crystal had really kindly sent 4 precut white kites. Yeay no maths!

After sorting the strips out into same length sizes (and pondering whether they were sent in same length sizes before I emptied the contents of the envelope out onto my cutting table and then pondering why I always think of these things too late),..

I made a triangle paper template. I couldn't quite figure out how to decide how big the paper template should be for an 11” finished square so I googled it. Still couldn't work it out. So then I made the biggest triangle I could from an A4 sheet and started sewing.

The only tricky bit came after sewing one side of strips to the kite moving on to the other side. I wasn't sure how to attached the other longest strip so that the kite point was in the right place. Turns out that as long as you're using 1/4” seam allowance (or if your pattern says otherwise) then it will line up fine.

After attaching strips to both sides of the kite shape I pressed the seams open and then cut the excess from the point of the kite. I decided not to cut the outside until after I had attached all the kites together so I could make sure the final block was exactly 11”.

So after making four pieces...

I then attached two together....

Then attached the two halves together. I would say take this bit slowly and try and line up the centre points and the parts where the colour meets the white kites.

This block really suited my style of sewing, basically messy! You can attach the strips really quickly and you don't have to tidy the block up until the end. I'm also really pleased with the back which in the past has been a bit all over the place but your joins only meet when attaching the 4 segments together.

Turns out my first thoughts were wrong again:
The tiniest scraps can be used to make beautiful things;
Spiderwebs are really easy and sew up really fast;
They look daunting but trust me, suitable for even a novice like me. I suspect the hardest part is in the cutting which Crystal did. Thank you Crystal!

An Interview with Saffron Craig on her new Bird Tree Collection

Recently arrived at Seamstar is the brand new collection from Saffron Craig.

Bird Tree is a truly wonderful collection, both in design and uses. Lovely purples alongside limes, greens and yellows. We can see this collection as a quirky skirt for an adult, a funky dress for a little one or unconventional curtains and cushions. It is also quite timeless in terms of seasons and we think it will work all year around.

For those not familiar with Saffron's past designs they include;

We caught up with Saffron to ask her about Bird Tree, design, sewing and life!

Where did your inspiration come from for your latest collection?

Saffron: The inspiration for the Bird Tree fabric range came to me one day when a flock of tiny yellow birds landed on a leafless tree. From where I was standing the birds appeared to be the leaves of the trees. To me it was one of those precious moments that nature shows me. I am lucky enough to have been able to recreate it onto a fabric and build a range around this truly inspiring moment.

This is the original colour way which we are expecting in a few weeks....

It shows the wonderful blue sky and a graphic drawing of the tree. It is surrounded by floating blossoms carried by the a warm summers breeze.

What is the best thing you have seen so far made from the Bird Tree fabrics?
Saffron: I have seen a lot of things made using the Bird Tree range, from skirts to quilts and cushions, even curtains. But one of my favourite is a little stool my husband painted and I upholstered for my daughter.

This range seems to have resonated with a lot of people because the colours are so different from what is available. Also the design is quite ageless and seems to fit with a lot of age groups.

What are you currently working on (both currently sewing and design work)?
Saffron: I have just finished three fabric ranges due to be released 2011. Today I have been sewing up some summer frocks from the Bird tree range, it's heating up down here in Australia! I also had to pull apart a quilt I started and will sew that up again. It needs more white as it is intended as a wedding gift. I also should receive the Bird Tree in blue this week so I will have to photograph that, upload it to the website and write about it.

You have to make a last minute present for a friend, what would you make (and preferably out of what fabric too)?
Saffron: I would probably make one of these dolls that are rather like a sculpture for a friend my own age. I've made them in the past and they're so much fun create.

Last week I made a girl's skirt to take to one of my daughter's friends birthday party, I thought it would be far more fun to make a skirt than go to the local toy store and buy something. I had it sewn in an hour.

Freya loved it and wore it for a week to preschool. I'm also known to make a quilt in a day if a baby is born. I love the energy of a new born baby and I know how precious they are, mothers just love wrapping them up in a snugly quilt.

Who is Saffron Craig and what is your design background?
Saffron: I am really a creative and happy person. I love nature and creating fabrics. I was born in Turo in the UK to hippie parents, who now live down the road. I grew up in Australia and graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology with an honours degree in design. My background is mainly in fashion design. I had my own fashion label for years before focusing on designing fabrics.
I am married and have a beautiful daughter, who inspires me everyday. Oh, and I love to travel. I have a little game I play with myself that every day I have to go to somewhere I have never been before. It can be as simple as standing under a new tree and waiting for another moment of inspiration.

Season No 1. Free Sewing Pattern - Travel Wallet

Lovely wallet for boarding passes and notes. It has been measured especially to fit a boarding pass but can also be re sized as credit card holder or CD wallet. Easy to make and a great gift for anyone travelling.

Fabric used in this pattern:
We used Momo Freebird for the outside and inside fabric (mid weight cotton).

Free pdf pattern available to download by clicking here or under the Free Travel Wallet link to the right. The pattern pieces are actual size so you need to print them normal size on your printer. They fit on four A4 sheets so you only need to tape them together and cut out.

You will also need:
Sew in interfacing 25cmx40cm
Iron on interfacing 25cmx40cm
Bag clasp clip 14mm

Instructions:
1.Cut pattern pieces making sure you use the right side of the template against the right side of your fabric and interfacing (as shown in photo below).

2.Attach iron on interfacing to fabric you are using on the inside of your wallet.
Tip: Place fabric onto large interfacing piece and iron on before using your template to cut around.

3.Pin sew-in interfacing to outside fabric and attach by sewing as close to the edge as possible.

4.If you want to embellish the front of your wallet do so now.

5.Add bag clasps – you don't need any special tools. Just create two small holes with your seam ripper. Push one part of the clasp through, add the washer and fold the metal bars over. It is important to add the washer as otherwise your fabric will rip over time.

6.With right sides of your two pieces together pin together.

7.If adding a ribbon loop - add the ribbon now.

8.Sew with the sew-in interfacing side up so you can avoid stitches. Sew as close to the side as possible making sure you leave the turning point marked open. Back stitch at the start and end.

9.Turn your wallet the right way out by pushing the fabric through the turning point. Then press flat.

10.Stitch the edge below the female clasp which closes the open turning point.
Tip: Stitch neatly on front patterned side as this is the side you will see.

11.Press the folds (shown as dotted lines on your template).
Tip: Match up your clips and press those folds – it covers up earlier mistakes if your clips are a little bit out.

12.Fold the bottom section up as shown in photo below. Sew around 3 sides of the wallet whilst the top section is open (don't sew along the bottom section).

13.Press again for a crisp finish.

14.Finished – Give as a gift, sell at a craft fair or go travel!

Block 2 - All About Half Square Triangles

For the second quilt block I received this fabric from Karen.

We had to make 1 quilt block 12.5” square. Three thoughts struck me when I opened the envelope.....

1. That's nice fabric
2. There's not much of it
3. Oh dear........There's not much room for error on this one

As a relative beginner (I say 'relative' as this is my second quilt block project don't you know), I decided to make a few notes.....

The Requirements:

*The block must have 2 colours with equal amounts of white.

Ok got it.

* The square must consist of smaller squares. Examples given (and following my research what the examples given look like as I had no idea!):

*No big stars
(little ones were ok but as I wasn't sure what the whole star thing was about I decided to stay away from anything star shaped whatsoever).

The Plan:
Anyway my thought process was (yes there was a thought process this time), that as I had only 2 colours and white, 9 patches may look a bit plain. I decided to do half square triangles but mix them up a bit to get a bigger overall pattern.

There was a note in the instructions that said:
“If anyone is feeling brave a block made entirely of 1 inch squares would be fab!”
Due to my lack of block experience I didn't understand the difficulty of doing 1” squares but at the same time I understood you needed to be brave to do it so I quickly divided my big 12inch square into 3inch squares (4 equal rows and 4 equal columns).

My finished block needs to be 12.5 inches so Karen can finish it to 12 inches. So each of the finished 4 blocks across needed to be 3inches (with ¼ inch seam allowance around the edges left for Karen to sew in). Initially I failed to add a seam allowance for sewing the blocks together. Then got all a bit puzzled and then found this rule for making half square triangles:

'Whatever you want your finished block to be add 7/8inch'

Firstly this was a bit of a pain to me because (a) I dont work in inches so hate working in eighths of inches and (b) I kept making test squares and they were still wrong! Then I found on the net (what did we do before the internet?) that someone said add an inch as you can always trim it a bit. Perfect!

So Tip 1 in making half square triangles:
Cut your squares 1inch bigger than you want your final square to be.

The fabric grain (don't switch off like I used to when hearing the dreaded 'fabric grain' phrase) is really easy. You can find the selvages of the fabric as the strongest grain runs parallel to this. This rule is fine before you cut all the selvages off ready for sewing or when you've got a table full of half square triangles and you need to sew them together! Easiest is to pull your fabric left and right and then again top to bottom. The strongest grain has less pull and that's what you want all running in the same direction.

So I cut out 4 red squares (each 4inch square), 4 green and 8 white.

You can cut a square diagonally to get your triangle and then sew the two half triangles together. However I found that method to be rubbish because it's fiddly to get the triangle through your sewing machine (it pulls the corner of your triangle in) and the fabric all goes a bit stretchy.

Much easier is to pin 2 squares together, then draw a pencil line down the diagonal. I had a 1/4inch foot on so I used the pencil line as a guide and stitched either side of the pencil line.

The cut down the pencil line, press and voila, you have 2 half square triangles! You also feel you are going twice as fast doing it this way :)

Occasionally you have to double check you are sewing on the correct diagonal so that when opened up your grain (and print if applicable) are going the right way. Apart from that, once you've got all your squares cut it is like a little conveyor belt. If you then want to go even faster you can do this:
Get all your pinned squares with pencil lines lined up. Sew one line and don't cut the thread, just push the next one through. Then remove a whole string of them from the machine and cut the threads.

Tip 2 in making half square triangles:
Don't cut the fabric into triangles and then sew but rather cut into squares, sew and then cut.

After creating all of the half square triangles and sewing each row together I then began to attach the rows to each other.

I ironed the seams flat (I don't go in for all of that pushing the seams to the same side as it makes it bulky so I am a flat seam person).

Although I had been so precise in my cutting and 1/4” seams, one of my rows just wouldn't line up perfectly with its neighbour row.

where's my seam ripper?

I reattached 'problem' row three times with the same result. It was a millimeter out here and there. I went on a big research mission on the net to work out how to get all the seam points to match up and I found a couple of things:

You can do this – match your seam points and put a pin in the centre of your seam to hold it. Or even fractionally edged your top seam further forward before pinning as the top fabric may push back a bit as it goes through your machine, so by edging it forward you are counteracting the push back.

Or you can do this – don't get hung up on the seam points! I'm a perfectionist and to start with it was really getting to me. Then I read a lot of experienced quilters on the net saying that you need to step back and look at the bigger picture and not study the block with a magnifying glass. Some even said they stopped quilting because aiming for perfection meant they lost the enjoyment in it.

Tip 3 in making half square triangles:
Yes be precise but if your seam points are slightly off it doesn't matter. Look at the overall block not the tiny details.

So step back (and if your seams are really bad - step back AND squint) and I think my finished block isn't too bad for my second ever quilting effort.......

Encouraged by my new found love of imperfection I had another go at a half square triangle block. I whipped up this boat block using reds, oranges and whites by Saffron Craig, Laurie Wisbrun and Hoodie.

I am really pleased with it. The points don't match perfectly everywhere but I don't notice that now.
When I look at this block I see a perfect boat.

.............albeit a boat that I wouldn't necessarily trust to hold up in the open sea :)

An Interview with Pat Bravo and new Paradise collection in stock

Needless to say, we love welcoming new designers to Seamstar. However we have be so so so looking forward to getting our hands on this latest collection by Pat Bravo. Paradise is well named and without wanting to sound like Stacy (aka Gavin & Stacy) these fabrics are LUSH!

There are a lot of floral fabrics on the market so it takes something extra special to wow us now (aren't we picky!). There are a number of thing which we love about these fabrics and which sets Pat Bravo apart:

The first thing that strikes you, is that the prints are so crisp. Also, as a collection they are well thought out and work wonderfully together. Funky, modern florals with coordinating geometric and stripes. Think sophistication, glamour and chic!

Paradise has two really gorgeous colourways – the collection is split into a Sunrise Pallet and a Sunset Pallet.

As usual with a new designer to Seamstar we wanted to know a bit more about the designer and Pat was kind enough to give us this interview.....

Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind your latest collection Paradise?

Pat: What inspired me to create "Paradise", was my recent trip to Paris; With every single step I took on each street, new designs, colors, and prints came to mind, and, as a result, Paradise was given birth. I wanted to convey all the beauty I saw in the city through my fabrics; a message of style, sophistication and utter exquisiteness. I've always wanted to do a Marie Antoinette - inspired collection since I can remember, but somehow never did it. Until I went to Paris, and was in trance with the magnificence of the city. After years of reading books about France, Versailles, Louis XIV, and more, actually being there was like a surreal experience, and the colours and glorious prints just stuck with me!

What items do you think will work best for making out of Paradise fabrics?
Pat: Well, if I had to choose, I'd go for the Nouvelle Quilt with the Paradise fabrics... It's a super easy "quilt as you go" project with striped blocks that is part of my Mini Pattern line.

Do you have a favourite fabric or collection you have designed?
Pat: To this date, my favourite had been "French Riviera"… well, that has just changed now that I did "Dreaming in French"! I must say it's my best work so far… it totally reflects who I am as a designer and I can't wait for everyone to see it! It will be available this September.

Do you remember your first sewing project?
Pat: Actually, I do! It was a hand-sewn pillow I did back in elementary school… (not sooo long ago, haha). Unfortunately I don't have it with me any more… I also remember doing a crochet headband when I was 8 years old!

What is your most treasured hand made possession?
Pat: I actually started hand-painting my fabrics… and I would do art quilts using them!… now that I think of it, how did I have time for soooo much work? Well, if I had to choose, I would say my most treasured possession is my "Purple Afternoon" quilt, made out of hundreds and hundreds of tiny little fabric pieces!

Who is Pat Bravo and what is your designing background?
Pat: I live and breathe art and am a lover of all things beautiful. When I was a little girl back in Argentina I realized I had a passion for everything hand-made, and I also realized I was actually quite good at it. But it wasn't until I came to live to the U.S that I fell in love with quilting, and the rest is history…I try to convey the message of who I am through my designs and truly hope everyone can get to know me through them.

First Makes! Using Echino by Etsuko Furuya

As soon as the Echino by Etsuko Furuya fabric came in I wanted to make something...........anything from it!

I wasn't disappointed. The fabric is lovely to work with. A linen/cotton blend so heavier weight. Easy to sew and easy to press. I made a shopper bag for my Seamstar parcels when going to the Post Office!

In total for this medium bag I used:

3/4 meter of Etsuko Furuya - Echino Spring 2010 - Helicopter in Purple
1/4 meter piece of Etsuko Furuya - Echino Spring 2010 - Camera in Purple (although it was a really small piece of the 1/4 meter and I have loads left over so I'm going to make a purse and a glasses case); and
1/2 meter of Kona solid in dark violet for the lining.

So next time you place a Seamstar order - rest assured your package is travelling in style :)

A review of the Dharma Eco-friendly bag by Serendipity Studio

The pattern contains instructions and a pattern on the reverse that you have to copy. The instructions are for a bag in 3 sizes, all with an elasticated pocket on the front which the bag can be folded into. No more having to buy plastic carrier bags when you make an unexpected trip to the shops. Also if you make all three bags they will 'nest' inside each other once folded up.

If you want a true foldaway bag that will fold small then I would recommend using a mid-weight cotton outer and lining fabric. I wanted something really robust as i'll be using it for packages daily, so I chose a home décor weight cotton/linen blend (Echino by Etsuko Furuya) with a mid-weight cotton lining in purple.

The end result of my bag is gorgeous and I love it. I'm not sure whether it was the instructions or the fabric I used but it was easy to create the side pleats and the hidden seams. It looks perfect!

Cons of this pattern:
* You have to copy the pattern pieces rather than being given them on pattern paper. I photocopied mine and stuck them together to save the expense of pattern paper.
* The pattern has hand drawn diagrams rather than photos but after a few reads it is self explanatory.

Pros of this pattern:
* Even in the medium sized bag there is tonnes of room.
* Handy elasticated pocket which, when you know how to do it you can use on other items.
* The end result is great!

Some extra notes on the pattern that may help you (i .e. where I got stuck and how I got out of it):

At point 4 the pattern tells you to cut a rectangle for the pocket (depending on your chosen size of bag), 9.5” wide x 17” long. If your pattern doesn't have a right way up I guess it doesn't matter which way you cut it. My fabric had a right way up print and I couldn't get my head around which way was wide and which was long (I thought it was describing the pocket and as the pocket has elastic in it I wasn't sure). With hindsight, Serendipity Studios were talking about cutting your fabric on the width 9.5” by 17” down your fabric length.
The 9.5” is going to be the top of your pocket. The 17” is going to be folded so the side of your pocket is 8.5”. Also the pattern goes on to say to fold the pocket piece in half lengthwise. I think that is an error and it should say width-wise.

At point 18 the handles are sewn together. Now I know (again with hindsight) I was being a bit thick but just to be clear: you will have 2 sections at this point (each one is made of an outer fabric with an inner fabric attached at the top). When the pattern says turn one the right way it doesn't mean one handle of 1 section but rather 1 whole section and put this inside the other whole section. If you try to attach one handle to the other of the same section like I did you end up with a bag handle that looks like a halter neck and murmurs of 'where's my seam ripper?'.

At point 26 there is a lot of finishing sewing. I didn't do any of that. I just sewed across the handle seams through both layers to connect each handle and my bag works fine!

We now have new Japanese fabrics!

Fresh and Funky Bee - My First Quilt Block!

For the first block of our Fresh and Funky Bee (and my first quilt block ever!) Lynette sent these fabrics to me .....

Here is how my first quilt blocks went:

hmmm should I have joined a quilt bee when I've never made a quilt block? It's OK, it is ages away anyway.....

woohoo the fabric package has arrived.....hmm you know that now means you will have to make a quilt block?.......oh no, don't open the package......ignore the package and it'll go away....I've got loads of time to do the blocks....

ooooo look at all these other sewing projects I've got to do.....I'll put them on top of the package, that way I don't have to think about it....brilliant!

oh my god it's the 30th July!!!! Only 2 days to do the quilt blocks ....arrghhhhh!
thank goodness Lynette has put in lovely detailed instructions and even an online tutorial. hmmmmm I could start the blocks today but I had better think about it for a while longer........

OK I have no plan,..... I know, I'll just start cutting and sewing without any plan whatsoever....yes that's a great idea. In fact that in itself is my plan.

An interview with Laurie Wisbrun about her new Tufted Tweets collection

We now have the very funky Tufted Tweets fabrics in stock (we love them!) and the designer, Laurie Wisbrun, was lovely enough to give us an interview.....

Your new Tufted Tweet collection is very quirky and we love it! Where did you come up with the design?

Laurie: Birdies on Chairs was the very first pattern I designed specifically for fabric. I’ve always been a fan of mid-century modern furniture and I’d recently been to an exhibit that showcased mid-century designs so I think that was fresh on my mind that night when I started designing that pattern. And I loved the idea of adding the unexpected little birdie to the chairs. Tufted Tweets just grew from there. I am completely obsessed with pattern and color. I love the idea of mixing things that don’t really ‘go’ together.

What kinds of things do you think people will make from the Tufted Tweet prints?

Laurie: For loads of stuff! Quilts, bags, home dec projects (how cute would curtains be!), pillows (chairs on chairs!). Children’s clothing. Big people clothing (I just finished a tunic for myself) and I’ve added PJ pants to my personal list!

Tufted Tweets has just been released (and already sold out in the USA!) but what is the best thing you've seen so far made using the prints?

Laurie: Lots of things but I love the Unfurnished quilts designed by Ashley of Film in the Fridge fame. The pattern is available as a free download HERE

From all of your collections do you have a favourite print?

Laurie: That’s like asking someone who their favorite child is! ;) I love them all for different reasons. I love the fresh greens and blues of the Grass color way in Tufted Tweets. And of course, from my limited release fabrics that I produce myself, I have a soft spot for my Donkeys in Wellies. I came up with that design while on a rainy vacation in Greece where I was wishing I had packed my Wellies and there happened to be a donkey in a field behind our B&B. Design inspiration can come from anywhere!

Who is Laurie Wisbrun and what is your design background?

Laurie: I worked in marketing and advertising for close to 20 years. Two years ago I was working in Manhattan at a big ad agency, and realized that I was really, really ready for some major changes and wanted to do something that I really loved doing. I unfortunately had no idea what that was though, so I just started experimenting. I knew I wanted to actually create something that was creatively meaningful to me though. First I tried cheese making. For a few weeks I seriously considered moving to Vermont to be an artisan cheese maker but turns out I was no good at making cheese ;)

Part of my refuge from my crazy work life has always been sewing and quilting. And have always loved repeated patterns. I happened upon the Spoonflower beta. Which was closely followed by a night class at Fashion Institute of Technology on marketing your own line. A few months later I decided to make the leap and focus on building my own business. So I quit my job and moved back to Austin, which is where I went to college and where I was living before my years in NYC. It was a perfect move at the perfect time. It’s a hugely creative city and I have so much support here. My Mom lives close by which has been really wonderful. It has been all the support and encouragement from my family, friends and from my blog readers that has really given me the courage to keep going and trying new things.

Finally what's in the fabric pipeline?
Laurie: I’m always designing new collections and have some new things coming in my Etsy store in the next month or two.

An Interview with Kate Conklin…..

We are so excited to now have quilt patterns by Kate Conklin Designs in the Seamstar shop!

The patterns are both fresh and modern and you can check them out here. As if that wasn't enough Kate has very kindly taken the time to give us an interview which includes some great tips so read on. Perfect timing for me as I'm about to start my first quilting bee (scary!).

What is your design process when creating your quilt patterns?

Kate: Sometimes it starts with a sketch and sometimes the fabric inspires the design. I usually have a few different designs stored away in the back of my mind, just waiting for the perfect fabric. With "Dandelion Windows" it started with Saffron Craig's Field's fabric. It was just so beautiful I couldn't cut up those large prints, but I didn't want to leave the fabric in large squares either. The idea of seeing the fabrics though a window meant I could cut it up, but still show off the large prints.

I always sketch a number of designs on graph paper first (and play with the design in my mind for a few weeks), then I import pictures of the fabric into my Electric Quilt 6 program so I can see what the finished quilt will look like. Sometimes I change my mind half way through, but I usually plan the whole quilt out before I start. As I'm designing my quilts I think of the easiest and quickest way of doing something. I love 'stack and slash' for that reason. I've used it in many of my designs because its a way of making an improvisational style quilt quickly and without fabric wastage.

Where do you get your inspiration from for your quilt designs?

Kate: It comes from lots of different places, anywhere really, for example "Charm Bracelets" was inspired by all the beautiful charm bracelets my friends were wearing and the fact that fabrics are my 'jewels'. I'm fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the world right next to the beach and national parks, so I'm surrounded by nature's inspiration. I find hiking a great time to dream up new quilt designs.

Fabric is a primary source of inspiration for me. I feel like I've entered the quilting world at an exciting time. The fabrics coming out are so interesting and beautiful and modern. Often the fabric will dictate to me how it should be cut and the general direction of the quilt design. Quilting blogs have been another wonderful source of design ideas - I particularly love improvisationally pieced quilts. We're so spoilt to be able to share ideas and help each other push the boundaries of quilt design even if we live half way across the world.

In terms of design, what do you think makes a great quilt?

Kate: I love quilts in which the fabric is allowed to shine. I learned a great tip from Denyse Schmidt in her book, Denyse Schmidt Quilts, to only use patterned fabric for 30% of your quilt, and solid fabric for the rest. Although I use more than 30% patterned fabric in my quilts, I try to remember to let the fabric be the star.

Another thing that makes a great quilt is something that creates interest and movement in the quilt. In "There's a Square in There" I added little solid strips of fabric randomly to create interest, and in "Charm Bracelets" I varied the size of the squares slightly to give it some movement. I think quilting can add so much to the design of a quilt. If you take a look at many of Denyse Schmidt's quilts - they look deceptively simple, but the quilting is exquisite. I enjoy a mixture of machine and hand quilting on my quilts.

Who is your favourite fabric designer or favourite fabric collection?

Kate - There are so many gorgeous fabrics (many of which can be found at your shop) but its no secret I love Saffron Craig's fabrics. I keep gravitating towards them because the designs are so beautiful and interesting, the fabric's very soft and the colour's rich. The mixture of small and large designs create exciting possibilities for using them in quilts.

For example, the animals in the elk landscape could be fussy cut for the centre of blocks, with multiple borders using the coordinating fabric, or it could be used as a landscape as I did in "Sierra's Forest". I've met Saffron, and she's absolutely lovely and has such passion for her work.

For non-quilters like me fussy cutting is when you want to center a particular part of the fabric to fit within the size of your quilting block. So in Kate's example you would fussy cut the size of square needed around the elk so that the elk would be the center of the block.

Do you have any more quilt patterns in the pipeline?

Kate: I always have a number of quilts in the pipeline! I've almost finished a quilt using Laurie Wisbrun's Donkeys and Boots fabric. It's another 'stack and slash' quilt similar to "There's a Square in There" but this time its wonky and fun and very bright. Another design I'm very excited about uses free form curved cutting (stack and slash style again) and then piecing the curves without pins (something I've just discovered).

At Seamstar we totally love Laurie Wisbrun and are really looking forward to the entire Tufted Tweets collection arriving next month!

Who is Kate Conklin and what is your design background?

Kate: I live an hour north of Sydney Australia with my husband Todd and 2 young children aged 2 and 3. I work as a speech pathologist during the day and quilt designer at night after the kids are in bed. I never thought of myself as creatively minded before I discovered quilting two years ago. I was more mathematically inclined, but I have since discovered that maths comes in handy when designing quilts. As I dream up quilts in my mind, I can often calculate the different measurements for various block configurations before I even put it on paper. Discovering my love for quilts and design has been such an exciting journey, almost like falling in love. My father is a graphic designer, my grandmother a professional seamstress and I have always been surrounded by art and music so maybe it's in the blood.

Fresh and Funky Quilt Bee

What I love about sewing is the gorgeousness of hand made fabric things.
What I'm not so fond of is any project with boring repetitive bits!
So this Fresh and Funky Quilt Bee is perfect:

It's set up by Forest Poppy and Me and Ma so it'll be fresh and modern and I can end up with something lovely like this:

Plus, as its a bee, I won't have to make the same quilting square over and over (no repetitive bits - yay!) but rather everyone gets to sew different blocks each month. Seamstar now has its own Flickr group called: "Seamstar Stitched". I have to say a BIG THANK YOU to Justine for her suggestion and help on this (Sew Justine Sew is her lovely blog which I love to read and highly recommend).

"Seamstar Stitched" is for pics of lovely fabrics, inspiration and anything made from things bought from Seamstar. I have to say that I totally love being sent photos of things that have been made. I can't tell you how brilliant it is to wrap fabric up, send it off and then get a photo of a finished item that was in my hands as fabric a few days earlier. So anyway I would love all Seamstar Customers to join the Flickr group and upload your pics.

I thought it would be nice to have a "Seamstar Stitched" fabric give-away. The winner will be sent a free meter of fabric which the winner can choose from our mid-weight cotton range (found here- Seamstar Mid Weight Cotton).

Australian Fabric Day!

I'm really pleased that lots of new fabrics have arrived from Oz......

Firstly Saffron Craig's entire new collection called Forest Elementals was delivered last week. It's a move away from the quirky owl and fairy characters of the last two collections. This time Saffron has created 'mythical scenes' with Elks, Birds and Flowers. Here are a couple of prints from the Purple/Magenta colourway (we also have the Aqua/Brown colourway):

Now I'm yet to make a quilt but have been inspired recently both by Lily's Quilts blog and having seen the quilt kit from Saffron Craig to make this Forest Elementals quilt.

I have put a couple of Elk Quilt bundles in the shop with PDF Pattern to make the gorgeous quilt above. Check them out here.

Also Fat Quarterly have a brilliant article on Quilting Blocks they have made using the collection (and thanks to Fat Quarterly for allowing me to use their pics). I think it is wonderful how you can give different people the same collection and they each come up with something totally different and gorgeous:

My favourite Quilting Block is this one (because they've even managed to sneak one of my favourite collections in - Wonderland by Momo);

AND I found some Snip Snip Sky in my fabric unit - When I saw it I couldn't believe it hadn't been sold as it was so popular and then I realised it was because it wasn't on the website - doh!!! I've just added the last 4 meters of Momo's Snip Snip onto the website.

It complements the Aqua/Brown colourway so I may make an attempt at my first Quilting Block myself.....

Also from Australia I've had a new delivery from sproutdesign to add more fabrics to our current collection. As always, these are gorgeous. Hand printed on heavier weight cotton so perfect for light upholstery or extra special project. Lauren n Jessi Jung and Sew Liberated Patterns

So much for a relaxing Saturday afternoon making my Summer top!

Even more new fabrics and patterns have arrived and again i've been busy uploading them. This time a new designer to Seamstar (or I should say designers as this is a mother and daughter team) - Lauren and Jessi Jung. Lovely Summery fabrics from the Botany collection - so we just need a bit of Summer now and everything is sorted!

Also several Sew Liberated patterns just added.....

Speaking of patterns I am at least going to make a start today on my Summer top by washing the fabric (I know not actually sewing but at least i'll feel like I've started it!). I am making this lovely pdf pattern from Frog Legs and Ponytails called Amelia (you can check Mindy's lovely shop out here http://www.froglegsandponytails.com/) :

I think i've now narrowed fabric choice down to either Alexander Henry's new Caitlin Stripe as I think that will create a funky 70's look;

or Bloom Vine by My Mind's Eye with the Polka Dot as the ties;

and then when Botany arrived I was thrown again as Bramble Vine in Ripple is a really gorgeous turquoise which is my favourite colour.

hmmmmm I think a cup of tea and reflection before I start cutting any fabric.

Yet another quick blog i'm afraid, just to say some more new fabric have arrived. This time Hunky Dory by Chez Moi. Really lovely pastels and quirky little flowers.

I've been working flat out all week uploading all the new fabrics and now need to go and put my feet up :)

oh before I go i've ordered lots of patterns from around the world so i'm hoping they will arrive over the next few weeks. Also after all this hard work i'm going to sew something as a treat! I'm thinking a Summer top for me and now i've written it here i'll have to do it :)

Just like buses........none for ages then all at once :)

Very quick post to say on Saturday 3 large boxes of fabrics were waiting for me when I arrived home. Obviously I love all of the fabrics I stock but I'm really loving the latest from Riley Blake Designs & My Mind's Eye. The quality of the fabrics is great and the designs are so crisp.

All have been uploaded to the website so take a look and let me know what you think.

I've also experimented with a new scale photo (instead of just stating the size of something in the design to give an idea of scale). See the bottom of each Riley Blake fabric description. Welcome any feedback on if they look ok and are helpful.

Roman Blind Sewing Notes

As i'm often asked whether the fabrics on the Seamstar website are suitable for blinds and curtains I thought i'd post a few pics of my newly finished window coverings (well, we did only move in last September).....

Here's my guide from my sewing notebook for making the Roman Blind.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not saying this is the correct way to make them but it's the way I make them!

My Roman Blinds were to fit inside the window recess so I just measured from top to the sill and added 1.5cm at the bottom for the seam allowance. At the top I added around 20cm so I had plenty of room for adjustment (see later).

I used lining with interlining already attached. I never use separate interlining any more as I find it too fiddly and you can buy lining with attached interlining for cheaper than buying it separately now.

I cut the interlining to the same size as the fabric, right sides facing and sewed around 3 sides, leaving the top open. After pressing and trimming the seams, turn it the right way around and press again to get a crisp look. Pin all over.

When it comes to the dowel pockets, Ive seen quite a few different ways to do these. I chose to make separate pockets that I sewed on. Also I did not put a dowel inside the blind or sew the ends of the pockets once the dowels were inside the pockets because I wanted to be able to remove the dowels and be able to machine wash the blind when needed.

The dowel pockets were made from the lining (cut on the bias) and tacked to the blind before sewing on. I love this Momo fabric but the butterflies were unforgiving of any errors in sewing across. However it did make sewing in a straight line easier :) Hand sew on the little rings onto each pocket around 5cm from the edge and at even intervals. Attach cords and thread them through the little rings.

I put my lowest pocket at around 10cm from the bottom. Then spaced the rest out at around 30cm (depending on the fabric pattern as I didn't want to sew over a butterfly). After the pockets were on I then remeasured the whole blind and folded the top inwards (both fabric and lining so it creates a neat edge), pressed and sewed it shut. When sewing the pockets on you loose some length and your blind will no longer fit, that's why I leave closing the top until last.

I used half sew and half stick velcro. Stuck one half onto the face of the batten and I sewed the other to the blind. An eyelet is screwed into the batten at the same place as where each of the cords are and an additional one at the end on the side where you are going to tie it off.

Then hang and wait for the dark so you can drop them down!

My Blue Momo blinds are for my living room so I used quite thin interlining as I needed them only for privacy and not to block out light but you can also buy blackout lining if needed.

For a bedroom I used Erin McMorris Wildwood for curtains....

& again Erin McMorris to jazz up an old duvet set. I dyed the duvet grey and made these easy pillowcases.....

.....which when I get tired of them I can cut up and make into something else :)

I've had a clear out to make room for lots of lovely Summer Fabrics which i'm expecting over the next few weeks......can't wait!

My Current Top 10 Fabrics ....... (sort of).......Number 10

This started as 'My All Time 10 Ten Fabrics' but after much indecision i've had to change it to my 'Current' top 10, as there is no way I can fit every fabric I have ever loved into 10 spots. So my caveat is they are fabrics from the last year.....and not ones that I haven't had in my hands yet (so not the lovely fabrics on order).....and also i've had to cheat on one as well - nevermind :)

At 10, and ok this is not going to blow the world away but it is a lovely little rose print from Tanya Whelan. I look at a lot of fabric and I don't think anyone does rose florals as good as Tanya. From the Darla collection - Rosie Dot Blue (I could also have chosen red or pink!).

Number 9, I sooooo love Alexander Henry (could easily put a top ten together just of AH prints alone) and Thunder Flower is just brilliant.

8. Eiffel Tower by Paula Prass. When I had this in my shop no one bought it! Secretly I was very happy and intended to make some curtains from it for my work room. Then over a couple of weeks it sold out. Gutted! I really love any prints with structures or buildings and the turquoise and red is inspired.

At 7 is the wonderful Patty Young. All of Patty's fabrics are great and she is a master at geometric prints. This is my favourite, now sadly out of print but I do have the same print in red coming soon (and am looking forward to seeing it).

Number 6 is Hoodie's Medetai which I think is fab.

5. I've gone for Saffron Craigs Softies. Not both softies mind, just the Koala. I say that as the Owl softie is the most popular and the poor Koala gets left behind and I feel sorry for him.

At 4 is Anna Maria Horner's Little Folks. Again I could choose any pattern and even the Folksy Flannels but representing the whole range of flannels and voiles is Forest Hills Sweet - gorgeous!

Number 3 (and see if you can spot the cheat) is everything by sproutdesign. I love them all and just can't choose!

At 2 (nearly finished!) is from the very sadly discontinued Wonderland collection by Momo - Rabbit Hole in Sugar. All gone but I have one quarter meter left which I know I will never make anything out of because it's great just as a piece of fabric.

And my Number 1 (this week anyway) is Inked by Alexander Henry.
It's funky and has attitude - what else do you need in a fabric?!?!
